10 Ways to Improve Your Speech

  1. Enroll in a speech improvement program conducted by Better Speaking.
  2. Record yourself on video or audiotape.  Look and listen for patterns and deficiencies in your body movements, rate of speech, volume.
  3. Have somebody with whom you interact routinely, such as a co-worker or family member, help to monitor your speech and correct you when needed.
  4. Practice speaking in front of a mirror.  Take notice of your body language.  Do you fidget too much?  Do you seem nervous?
  5. See a medical doctor and/or dentist for evaluation of your voice box or teeth.  These may be affecting the quality of your voice and may be fixed.
  6. The three most important words to perfect speech…Practice! Practice! Practice!
  7. Speak Up, Slow Down.  Many of us talk too fast, especially when in a hurry or under stress.  Louder, slower speech is easier for everyone to understand.
  8. Attend a public speaking group such as Toastmasters and learn more on do’s and don’ts of professional speaking.
  9. Write memos, post sticky notes, leave messages to yourself to monitor your speech everyday.
  10.  That lisp won’t go away, that speech won’t sound clearer, etc. if you don’t concentrate on improving it daily.
